The conversation regarding the conversion of paper records to an electronic health record (EHR) continues to progress. The EHR has been around for approximately 40-plus years; however, with President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the EMR discussion has reached new heights. One of ARRA’s four major initiatives is Health Care Information Technology (HIT). Through the ARRA’s initiative, HIT is expected to disburse $17-plus billion in incentives through Medicare & Medicaid reimbursement. This $17-plus billion will be awarded to physicians that adopt an EHR; however, there will be penalties to those physicians who do not adopt EHR.
The reasoning behind this is that an EHR enables physicians to reduce medical errors, lower malpractice risks, and insurance and increase insurance claim payments. Converting your practice from paper records to EHR can be an overwhelming task.
